Refillable Vaporizer Tips & Troubleshooting: Getting the Best Performance From Your Device

To get the best performance out of your refillable vape device, you need to understand how the coil works. The coil is the heart of every vaporizer. It’s the component that heats your e‑liquid, creates vapor, and ultimately determines the flavor, smoothness, and longevity of your device. When you know what your coil needs (and what it hates), you can avoid most common issues before they ever show up.

How Coils Actually Work

  • The coil heats up when electricity flows through it from the battery

  • The cotton wick absorbs e‑liquid, which is wrapped around the coil.

  • Heat + saturation = vapor

  • If either heat or saturation is off balance, you get problems and poor performance

Understanding this simple relationship makes troubleshooting way easier.

Your Coil Needs Time

  • One of the biggest mistakes beginners make is not giving time for the e-liquid to saturate the coil. When putting e-liquid in a fresh new coil, make sure you fill it to full, and let the coil inside fully wet/saturate for 5 minutes.
  • After taking several puffs, SLOW DOWN!

Your Coil Needs to Stay Wet / Saturated

  • The coil system in your vape is a lot like a car engine — you wouldn’t run your engine without oil, right? Vaporizers work the same way. If you keep using your device when the e‑liquid is running low, the coil doesn’t get enough saturation and ends up burning out long before it should. A simple rule of thumb: once your e‑liquid drops to about halfway, top it up. Keeping the coil fully saturated helps your coil run smoothly and last much longer.

Your Coil Needs the Right Power (Wattage)

  • Some types of e-juice vaporizes better than others on different power settings.
For freebase juice (3-6 mg), it is recommended to use a higher power, typically 30-80W.
For salt nic juice (10-20 mg), it is recommended to use a lower power, typically 10-40W.
  • If your device does not have a power adjustment setting, the resistance of the coils determine the power level.
For freebase juice (3-6 mg), it is recommended to use a lower resistance coil.
For salt nic juice (10-20 mg), you can use any coil to your preference.
A lower resistance, such as 0.4 Ohms will deliver more power for a stronger hit, and a higher resistance, such as 0.9 Ohms will deliver less power for a mellower hit.

Quick Tips

  • Do not leave the device in a hot car or freezing temperatures
  • Do not take puffs/hits longer than 2 seconds
  • Do not chain-smoke. After a few puffs, let the device rest so that the coil has time to saturate itself again with e-juice
  • Do keep your device upright whenever possible, for the most minimal leakage
  • Do keep your coil saturated, topping up e-liquid whenever it drops below half-way.
  • Do keep your device maintained by using a Q-Tip to wipe out excess condensation and any micro-leaks that are building up on the device

FAQ's

Why is my vape device or pod leaking?

There is no such thing as a leak-proof vape. Due to the constant heating and cooling cycles, the seals on the coil/pod will eventually wear down, causing slow leaks that develop a pool of e-liquid over time. Adding to this, there are small condensation that builds up over time, which can attribute to the leaks and pooling of e-liquid in your device.

These micro-leaks are normal as the device gets used, and as part of maintenance on your device, you should be removing the pod and wiping off excess liquid and condensation regularly. Changing your coil/pod more frequently will also help in keeping the device leak-free.

Why does my vape taste burnt?

Your coil or pod is most likely burnt out and needs a replacement. It is normal to develop the burnt taste when the coil is at the end of its lifespan. A coil/pod should last anywhere from 1 week to 4 weeks, depending on your usage and how well you keep the coil saturated.

If you just got a new device, or a new coil and it tastes burnt, it means it was not saturated long enough initially. You should wait at least 5 minutes for the e-liquid to saturate the coil before using. In some cases, the trigger button could have been accidentally pressed while there was too little e-liquid inside the coil or no e-liquid at all. This would burn the coil out immediately and it will need replacement.

How long will my coil last until it needs to be replaced?

A coil/pod should last anywhere from 1 week to 4 weeks, depending on your usage and how well you keep the coil saturated. For hygienic purposes, it is recommended to change your coil/pod regularly even if you don't vape all that much.

Why is my vape hitting too weak?

Try turning the power higher on your device if it supports Wattage adjustments. Otherwise, try using a lower resistance pod for a stronger hit. The coil or pod may be close to the end of its lifespan if it starts to hit weaker.

Why is my vape not hitting at all even though it has power?

If your device is turned on, charged, but not producing vapor, usually the culprit is the pod/coil. First check to make sure the coil/pod is making proper contact with the device. Sometimes, a small leak near the connection between the coil and device could prevent it from making good contact. If that does not solve the issue, the coil/pod is likely dead and needs replacement.

If an excessive leak happened at one point and e-liquid has seeped into the device, it may cause malfunction which causes it not to recognize any coils, and the device will need replacement.

Why is my vape spitting e-juice into my mouth and lips?

This is usually caused by a mix of conditions, but mainly, it is due to the coil being flooded with condensation, small water droplets that build up over time. It can drip into your coil and cause that unwanted gurgling and spitback. Also, it can be caused by low power where the device cannot quicky fully vaporize the liquid, causing it to boil and pop.

To prevent this from happening, take gentler hits instead of sharp hard hits, wipe out any excess condensation regularly, turn up the power of the device for a fuller vaporization, or switch the juice into a thicker mixture that minimizes spitback. (A 40/60 Ratio is considered thin, 70/30 Ratio is considered thick)
